I dream of Robot…

I’ve often wanted to build a simple robot, partly for fun and partly as a tool to find out how we see and interact with the world. Mostly for fun, actually. The Lego stuff seems a bit restrictive and a bit expensive, which has always put me off. And wiring together something from scratch, with soldering and resistors and capacitors, just seemed to hard. (Though Emma has just bought a soldering iron and made a nice IR torch with it, so it’s now an option…)

But then, when I was trying to do some actual work, I stumbled across this description of how to build a Braitenberg vehicle. It’s based on Arduino, which is apparently an open-source electronics platform – just plug the circuit board into the USB slot on your computer, write a few lines of trivial code, and wahey! Coolness just happens! No soldering required. So to my implicit shopping list I’ve added a beginner’s kit, an instruction book and some motors…
